Neil Shepherd, a longtime advocate of Christian higher education in Alabama, died Dec. 12, 2005. He was 82.
At the time of his death, Shepherd — a former member of Ruhama Baptist Church, Birmingham, in Birmingham Baptist Association — was a member of Vestavia Hills Baptist Church in Birmingham Association.
He earned his bachelor’s from Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham in 1948 and his juris doctor from Samford’s Cumberland School of Law in 1966.
Shepherd served Judson College in Marion as director of institutional advancement and returned to his alma mater to serve as Samford’s director of alumni affairs until 1985.
He was also a B-24 pilot in the Air Force, attaining the rank of 1st lieutenant and receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross. Shepherd was a former president of the American Cancer Society and was active in many other civic organizations.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Sue, who is a professor of piano at Samford, as well as two daughters, a son-in-law and two granddaughters. (TAB)
