After 60 years of service Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center’s “purpose still remains to provide a distinctly Christian environment for spiritual transformation and renewal,” Buster Taylor, Shocco’s executive director, told convention messengers Nov. 19.
After embracing the idea of Christian camps, Southern Baptists purchased Shocco Springs’ 40 acres in 1948 for $62,500, he said as he described a brief history of the conference center.
And now, celebrating its 60th anniversary, Shocco spans 725 acres and has hosted nearly 1.2 million individuals with more than 60,500 decisions for Christ being made.
“Shocco history from 1948 until today has truly been an amazing journey from beginning attendance of almost 5,000 to today’s 55,000 plus attending, and from a budget of about $33,000 to today’s $5.4 billion,” Taylor said.
Shocco’s legacy will be honored Dec. 12–13 during an anniversary celebration at which a book will be released canvassing the entire history of the organization and the ways Baptists have helped it grow.
“Thank you for your partnership with this diverse ministry,” Taylor told convention messengers. “You have sustained this ministry for the past 60 years as it provides a distinctly Christian environment.” (TAB)
