Shocco Springs Conference Center recently added two lodges and an activities center to better accommodate its growing number of guests, and they need Alabama Baptists’ help to name them.
“Our history has shown that for every 34 people who attend Shocco, statistically, one person makes a decision for Christ,” said Buster Taylor, executive director of the conference center. “Therefore, Shocco can impact more lives for God’s Kingdom as capacity increases.”
The new lodges, located in the Smith Camp area, are two of the three facilities that will make up the center’s East Ridge Cluster, a new development on the 725- acre conference center site
According to conference relations associate Wendy Westerhouse, both two-story lodges house 30 guest rooms including two wheelchair-accessible rooms, a large conference room with kitchenette and a smaller conference room on the lower level. Guest rooms sleep five, open to inside hallways and include private bathrooms.
Located on the hill above the camp’s lake and pool area, the new activities center includes an indoor climbing wall, conference room, office space for the recreation department and a gym containing two full-size basketball courts.
Westerhouse added that this facility is providing additional worship space for youth and children involved in summer events at the conference center.
“We actually have 1,200 chairs in the activities center while the chapel only seats 750,” she said.
Naming contest
As done in the past with newly constructed buildings, Alabama Baptists will be given the opportunity to share their love for the conference center by submitting names for the new facilities.
“We want our guests to share in naming the new buildings because of their love for our ministry and to help reflect our rich Alabama Baptist heritage,” said Taylor.
Voters are asked to offer three names for the lodges in the East Ridge Cluster and one name for the new activities center. Suggestions should be short and creative, blending well with existing facilities.
August 15 is the deadline for entries and winning names will be revealed at the building dedication ceremony for the facilities on Sept. 12.
To cast a vote in the naming contest, submit your ballot along with name and address information at one of the six campuses collection areas.
Another way to submit a ballot is to contact Shocco Springs at shoccosprings@shocco.org.
Suggestions may also be sent to Shocco through their site on the Internet. The address is: www.shocco.org.
