The Harvest … His Plan, Our Passion is the theme for this year’s “soul-winning commitment day” scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 7, throughout the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC).
The special-day emphasis is part of the North American Mission Board’s (NAMB) On Mission to Share Jesus initiative, developed and sponsored by NAMB’s evangelism group.
“It is a time when SBC churches are encouraged to promote evangelism, inspire, motivate, enlist and share the gospel,” said Dick Church, church evangelism resource manager for NAMB.
Sammy Gilbreath, director of the office of evangelism for the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions, noted that the special-day emphasis is a great reminder that evangelism is not an event but a lifestyle.
“This day is not meant to be a ‘one time to share’ but rather a day to renew our commitment to be lifestyle witnesses,” he said.
Gilbreath added that commitment can be better realized “if we ask ourselves, ‘What if today will be the last opportunity I have to tell my child, my mate, my friend (or) my neighbor how they can receive the free gift of eternal life?’”
Church agreed that evangelism is “a way of life and the very mission of the church.”
“Whether you observe On Mission to Share Jesus on Oct. 7 or another day of the year, make it a point to get out into the fields,” he said. “Jesus said that the harvest is plentiful. Let’s make that our passion.” (BP, TAB)
