A close-knit group of 180 Southern Baptists who have served in Indonesia gathered for a reunion June 14–17. The group traveled to Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center in Talladega from as far away as New Mexico and Washington.
Over the years, the group has laughed, cried and prayed together, said Virginia Harper, reunion coordinator. “There are all sorts of memories and experiences. We still celebrate that God called us,” she said. “Remembering that time never gets old.”
The families who served in Indonesia have yielded more than 65 TCKs (Third Culture Kids) and spouses who are now serving in various capacities all over the world.
In attendance at the reunion were retired International Mission Board president Jerry Rankin, Christian author Joe Turman and Hardin-Simmons University professor of theology Robert Sellers, who previously served in Indonesia. There were also eight doctors at the reunion who served in Indonesia. The family with the most members present numbered at 18, descending from Oliver and Virginia Harper of WaterStone Church, Warrior.
The reunion coincided with the 50th anniversary celebration of Camp Miki in Indonesia, a retreat for TCKs.
