State Baptist paper names new assistant editor

Grace Thornton has been named an assistant editor with The Alabama Baptist.

A native of Clarksdale, Miss., Thornton has worked at the paper as Web manager/advertising associate since November 2003.

“It’s rare to find a place where ‘iron sharpens iron’ both professionally and spiritually, and I’m grateful for the privilege to work in such a place,” Thornton said. “The Baptist is a quality publication, and it’s a blessing to be a part of it.”

In 2003, Thornton graduated from Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss., with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and English. During her college years, she served as editor of the student newspaper, The Mississippi Collegian. For two years, she also worked as a reporter and freelancer for The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Mississippi’s largest daily newspaper.

In 2003, the Southeast Journalism Conference named Thornton in the top 10 college journalists in the Southeast. That same year, she was also named outstanding journalist of the year at Mississippi College. Managing editor Jennifer Davis Rash said, “I look forward to having Grace as part of the editorial staff. She brings excellent skills to our team and will be a perfect fit for the position.

“During the past 14 months, Grace has demonstrated professionalism, strong spiritual maturity and a desire to serve in the ministry here at The Alabama Baptist,” Rash said. “I anticipate a positive contribution on her part to telling the story of Alabama Baptists.”

Thornton, along with assistant editor Erin Webster, will assist Rash in the daily and weekly duties that come with producing a newspaper. Her assignments include news reporting, feature writing, photography, layout and design. She fills the position left vacant by Anthony Wade, who resigned Dec. 31.

A member of The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, Thornton is the daughter of Francis and Ann Thornton. She has one brother and one sister.
