An analysis of suicide data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows a significant jump in youth suicides following the release of the Netflix orignal show “13 Reasons Why” which depicted a teen girl killing herself.
The series debuted in March 2017 and during April 2017 alone 190 U.S. tweens and teens took their own lives.
The April 2017 suicide rate among kids aged 10 to 17 was .57 per 100,000 people, nearly 30% higher than the preceding five years included in the study and a 19-year high in suicides, researchers found.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for U.S. teens, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.
