WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court announced Oct. 28 that it would hear the case of Gavin Grimm, a transgender high school student born female but seeking the right to use the boys’ restroom.
Grimm, who attends Gloucester High School in southeastern Virginia, was allowed at first to use the boys’ restroom, according to The Christian Post. Later the school implemented a policy requiring students to use restrooms matching their birth gender but providing three private restrooms for “students with gender identity issues.”
Grimm filed a lawsuit against Gloucester County Public Schools in 2015 that went to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Richmond, which ordered school leadership to allow Grimm to use the boys’ restroom.
In September 2015, U.S. District Court Judge Robert G. Doumar backed school officials, ruling against Grimm. But in April the Fourth Circuit ruled against Doumar.
Now the Supreme Court will hear the case, which has wide-reaching ramifications on the political debate over the extent to which public schools should accommodate transgender students, according to The Christian Post. (TAB)
