“Closer”
Goldenvine
The Freemans are the perfect example of sticking with what works. Ever since the group’s debut into the world of southern gospel music, the Freemans have peppered their music with a country flavor and for them, it’s become their trademark sound. When it comes to southern gospel music, country-style, it’s fairly safe to say the Freemans are the masters.
“Closer” continues that tradition — even though you might hear a bit more “convention-style” singing on this recording than in previous efforts. But whatever the case, the Freemans have poured their soul and hours of hard work into this recording, and as always, it’s a first-class effort.
Darrell, Chris, Joe and Misty all have ample opportunity to shine on “Closer” and with 11 songs to work with, it was just a matter of time before something struck gold with southern gospel radio. As a matter of fact, with the first radio single, “Put Your New White Robe On,” the Freemans have yet another Top Ten song. And frankly, any of the other 10 cuts on “Closer” could make a strong showing on the national charts.
In a day and time when consistency can be hard to find, the Freemans have stood fast to what works for them — and it’s still working. “Closer” points out that it’s working even better than before.
