Tornadoes recently swept through areas of Oklahoma, causing significant destruction, including destroying the church building of Trinity Baptist Church, Idabel.
On the morning of Nov. 5, Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief teams were onsite to help in Idabel and elsewhere, with chainsaw teams and others to assess the damage.
Other areas hard hit in Southeast Oklahoma include First Baptist Church, Calera, which also saw damage to its church building.
‘On the scene to help’
Sam Porter, Oklahoma Baptist DR interim director, is asking Southern Baptists to pray for those impacted by the tornadoes.
“We have teams already serving by Saturday morning,” Porter said.
“On Friday (Oct. 4), I was called by the Oklahoma Emergency Management leader,” he said. “I told him, ‘We were on it’ and would be on scene to help. We serve people in need to share the love of Jesus with them.”
Porter noted that Oklahoma Baptists will collaborate as part of a multi-faceted response of trained DR volunteers from various areas, including Bryan Baptist Association, Enon Baptist Association, Frisco Baptist Association, Baptist Collegiate Ministries and others.
Disaster Relief work will include feeding units, shower trailers, chainsaw teams, debris clean-up and more.
