Jimmy Dorrell. Birmingham: New Hope Publishers, 2006. 215 pp. (Paperback).
Subtitled "14 Realities About Today’s Church That We Don’t Want to See," this book is a collection of testimonies from a church with a varied constituency of homeless people, college students, middle-class Christians, mentally ill persons, drunks and former prison inmates.
Quite interestingly, Jimmy Dorrell is pastor of Church Under the Bridge. This body of believers — 300 of them — meets each Sunday under an interstate highway in Waco, Texas.
Fortunately they are finding the power of the gospel in unique ways. This book speaks volumes to the majority of American churches made up of middle- or upper-class people. Readers will be shocked, surprised and nourished spiritually.
