Truett Seminary professor dies after cancer battle

HOUSTON — Chip Conyers, one of the first faculty members of Truett Theological Seminary in Waco, Texas, died July 18 at the age of 60 in Houston following a long struggle with cancer.

Conyers, whose full name was Abdah Johnson Conyers, “possessed a rare combination of gifts — a wonderful ability to teach, to write and to relate as a mentor to students,” said Baylor President Robert Sloan, who hired Conyers in 1994 while serving as Truett’s first dean.

Conyers held bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Georgia and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. He earned his doctorate from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.

He was chair of the department of religion and philosophy at Charleston Southern University in South Carolina before joining Truett as professor of theology.

Conyers is survived by his wife, Debbie, two children and one grandson.
