Tuscumbia’s Westside Baptist loses steeple in storms; disaster relief crews at work

Westside Baptist Church in Tuscumbia lost its steeple when an EF-1 tornado ripped through the city late Feb. 15.

The tornado was part of a large line of storms that marched through the entire state that night and in the early morning hours of Feb. 16, producing strong straight-line winds and spawning tornadoes.

Westside posted on its Facebook page that the church building had “suffered significant damage.”

The Colbert-Lauderdale Baptist Association disaster relief team was in Tuscumbia today (Feb. 16) helping residents with cleanup, according to Mark Wakefield, Alabama Baptist Disaster Relief strategist. Disaster relief volunteers are also assessing damage in other areas.

In Kentucky and Tennessee, flooding has caused massive damage and at least nine fatalities, according to news sources.

Rick Lance, executive director of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions, posted on Facebook that “with the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding hitting the Appalachian region, Alabama Baptist disaster relief, the Yellow Shirt Army, is on standby to be of assistance. Join together in praying for all who have been affected.”
