Conservative United Methodists on March 1 revealed the name chosen for the denomination they plan to form if a proposal to split the United Methodist Church is successful: The Global Methodist Church.
The UMC General Conference is set to consider a proposal to split the denomination based on differing opinions regarding bans on the ordination and marriage of LGBTQ individuals. In February, the UMC again postponed that meeting, now scheduled for Aug. 29–Sept. 6, 2022, in Minneapolis.
The anticipated split would create a new conservative “traditionalist” Methodist denomination.
Individual churches and annual conferences could choose to join the new entity; otherwise, they’ll remain in the existing denomination by default.
