University of Mobile’s president Smith resigns effective immediately

University of Mobile (UM) President Tim Smith has resigned his position effective immediately.

The executive committee of UM’s board of directors made the surprise announcement today (Feb. 26).

The fourth president of UM, Smith had served as president of UM since April 2016. He informed the board of his decision on Monday, Feb. 25, citing personal reasons.

“On behalf of the board of trustees, I would like to thank Dr. Smith for his service to University of Mobile,” said board chairman Fred Wilson. “Many significant accomplishments have been made under his tenure, and we are grateful for his leadership. The board of trustees is dedicated to continuing the forward momentum of University of Mobile.”

Under Smith’s leadership, UM significantly enhanced academic programming and added doctoral programs, built a state-of-the-art facility for health and science professions, increased national rankings and grew enrollment.

The executive committee and board of trustees are working on finalizing plans for the immediate future of the university and ensuring a smooth transition, Wilson said.

UM is a Christ-centered liberal arts and sciences institution affiliated with the Alabama Baptist State Convention. Founded in 1961, the university has an enrollment of more than 1,700 and offers on-campus and online bachelors, masters and doctoral degree programs in more than 90 areas of study. (UM, TAB)
