Patty Burns said she’s starting to see a “flood” of churches posting their Vacation Bible School dates for this summer.
From her perspective as VBS strategist for the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions, that’s exciting.
“I pray this year our churches are standing room only as we magnify God,” Burns said.
She’s encouraged by how many leaders from around the state attended the VBS LIVE kickoff events in March — more than 600 gathered across the three locations, Enterprise, Huntsville and Montgomery.
Encourage and equip
The events were designed to help encourage and equip associational and church VBS directors and leaders in preparation for VBS in their churches and associations.
“Not only were our numbers higher this year, but there was such a sweet spirit and enthusiasm at each location,” Burns said. “The VBS team led with much passion as they equipped Alabama VBS leaders to prepare to share Jesus with their churches and communities.”
This year’s focus was on sharing the gospel with all ages.
“Vacation Bible School isn’t just for kids — teens and adults need to meet Jesus too,” Burns said. “At each location we provided a skit that modeled how to have a gospel conversation in everyday situations.”
Burns said at one event, someone met her at the front doors and said she was excited about what VBS LIVE would hold.
“She found me again as she was leaving and said, ‘This day did not disappoint — I came in anticipating, and I’m leaving excited,’” Burns said. “This is what we hope for — leaders to see training not as just an event to help enhance teaching skills but also to excite, motivate and encourage.”
