Volume of essays written in Humphreys’ honor

This spring, Fisher H. Humphreys was presented with a festschrift, a volume of essays written by colleagues and friends to celebrate his life and work as a Baptist theologian and seminary professor.

Although Humphreys is now retired, the book — titled "Theology in the Service of the Church" — indicates that his years teaching systematic theology at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (1970-–1990) and Samford University’s Beeson Divinity School (1990–2008) will not soon be forgotten.

"Great theologians don’t just point to themselves," said Timothy George, founding dean of Beeson and co-editor of the book, along with Eric F. Mason, associate professor of biblical studies at Judson University in Elgin, Ill. "They do their work in service of other people and the church, which is what Dr. Humphreys chose for his life’s work. … Many other people will agree with me when I say Dr. Humphreys deserves this kind of recognition."

Humphreys devoted himself to teaching to church theology as well as conveying his thoughts and perceptions on the gospel and the Trinity. George said Humphreys, who is the author of more than 10 books, interwove all three topics throughout his teachings and writings. The book serves as a reflection of these themes — especially church theology. Each essay highlights an aspect of church theology as it relates to other areas of Christian thought and life.

Even though he dedicated 38 years to shaping several generations of theologians, pastors and missionaries, Humphreys said he was surprised to be honored in such a way.

"I was surprised — astonished really — and deeply moved when my dean told me that he was putting together a volume of essays in my honor," Humphreys said. "Then when I saw the book, with its distinguished authors and splendid essays, I was once again deeply moved. I think I must have some of the best friends in the world."
