On a recent missions trip, I was reminded of Jesus’ amazing grace. I was sitting between my wife and a middle-aged Vietnamese woman on her way from America to visit her family. During a 14-hour plane trip, you have a great opportunity to make a new friend. I did. Our airplane hit bad turbulence halfway through our trip.
My new friend (I’ll call her Jane) became very scared after her meal was dumped in her lap by an unexpected “bump.”
Jane started crying and trembling as she pulled out her Buddhist prayer beads and began to pray frantically. My heart filled with compassion for her as I saw her fear grow in spite of her intense prayers. I knew her prayers were falling on a false god’s deaf ears.
As a divine appointment unfolded, I asked Jane if I could pray for her. She said yes and as my wife leaned over to join us, I voiced a prayer for God’s protection and peace. Soon the turbulence ceased and I asked Jane if she was OK. She smiled and said, “Thank you for saving me.”
I assured her that I did not save her; it was God. The door was opened for me to dialogue with her about her faith. I introduced her to Jesus, who loves her so much that He died on the cross for her sins and offers her eternal life with Him through faith. Jane didn’t trust Jesus as her Savior that day, but I believe with all my heart that she will. I left a New Testament with her and encouraged her to read the Book of John to find out even more about Jesus.
Jesus’ amazing grace gives us the opportunity to meet Him just as Jane did. Maybe this is yours. You must first acknowledge sin in your life and the fact there is a devastating penalty for it — a separation from God, now and eternally. Jesus paid that penalty for us by dying on the cross. He was buried and was resurrected three days later, displaying God’s power over sin and death. God offers us His unconditional love if we turn from our sin, trust in Jesus as our Savior and accept the gift of salvation He offers. I invite you to experience this amazing grace.
