Our lives are fragile. Recent events in our nation such as the bombing in Boston and the explosion in West, Texas, remind us of life’s unpredictability. The Bible assures us that unless Jesus returns “it is appointed for man to die” (Heb. 9:27). We must be ready for that.
Our lives are short. Not long ago I told a retired gentleman that I was envious of his status. “I wish I could set my own schedule and enjoy travel. I would love to be retired,” I remarked. He gazed into my eyes with intensity and replied, “It will happen sooner than you think. Life is short.” “What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes” (James 4:14).
Because of these realities how does one prepare for death? How can a person be certain that he or she is ready to meet God? John the disciple of Jesus expressed that “you may know you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13). Do you have assurance about your future destiny? The Bible reveals to us that we can know we are prepared for death.
Our sin condemns us before a holy God. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). Unfortunately for us, the punishment for sin is death (Rom. 6:23), and not just physical death. Jesus spoke of eternal separation from God in a place called Hell for those without an appropriate relationship with God; this is called the second death (Rev. 20:14).
You can be prepared for the transition of death and avoid the second death. Jesus — God’s eternal Son — came down to Earth as a man, lived a perfect life, died on a cross and rose from the dead to connect you with God. God took the curse of your sin and placed it upon Jesus. By grace through faith God takes Jesus’ righteousness and imparts it to you. Engage God with faith today. Believe and follow Jesus right now.
Not many things are certain. Your job could end. Your health could decline. One thing can be sure: You can agree with God today about your need for Jesus Christ as your hope for eternal life. You can be cleansed of guilt and experience life both now and in Heaven.
