Former Alabama Baptist pastor Steven Glenn Weekley died Sept. 11. He was 59.
A native of Perdido, Weekley graduated from the University of North Alabama in Florence and earned his master of divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, as well as his doctor of ministry from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
At the time of his death, he was serving as pastor of First Baptist Church, Hendersonville, Tenn. Weekley came to First, Hendersonville, Tenn., in 1987 and helped the church grow from 2,700 members to more than 8,900 today.
He had previously served as pastor of six churches across Alabama and Texas, including Lee Heights Baptist, Florence; First Southern Baptist, Muscle Shoals; First Baptist, Colbert Heights, in Tuscumbia; First Baptist, Fayette; and First Baptist, Jasper. Weekley was licensed to preach in 1963 and ordained in 1966 at Perdido Baptist Church.
He served as chairman of the Southern Baptist Convention’s (SBC) Committee on Nominations for 2007–2008 and formerly on the board of trustees of the Annuity Board of the SBC (now GuideStone Financial Resources).
Weekley also served as a member of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions, a member of the Alabama Baptist executive committee and president of the Alabama Baptist Pastors Conference in 1984. He delivered the convention sermon at the state convention annual meeting in 1986.
He is survived by wife Cathy, three children and five grandchildren. (TAB)
