HATTIESBURG, Miss. — William Carey University (WCU) trustees elected R. Thomas "Tommy" King as the ninth president of the Mississippi Baptist-affiliated institution based in Hattiesburg. King had served as acting president since shortly after the death last September of Larry Kennedy, who was WCU president for eight years before succumbing to complications from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
King earned an undergraduate degree in religion and philosophy at WCU and was named WCU Alumnus of the Year in 1980. He joined WCU’s faculty in 1999 and has served in numerous positions.
King also was pastor of Sandy Hook Baptist Church in Marion County, Miss., for 14 and a half years. He has been a member of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board and the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee. He holds degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
