The WMU Foundation gifted national WMU a $45,000 grant in an effort to help offset the loss for 2020 through the coronavirus pandemic. Throughout 2020, national Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) in Birmingham, Alabama, caught the ramifications of the pandemic. National WMU offers biblically sound church-wide learning experiences and missions opportunities for all ages; however, with many churches unable to gather on-campus for extended periods of time, fewer churches purchased WMU resources.
While the national WMU staff remains confident that God was not surprised by their circumstances, and they continue to trust Him to guide their organization during these unprecedented times, they still need help financially. National WMU is not a part of the Cooperative Program allocation budget and receives no funds from the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering or Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. National WMU is supported through the sale of magazines and products and from investments and charitable contributions through the WMU Foundation.
“While the WMU Foundation exists to support all WMUs around the world, we always want to look for ways to help the organization that created us,” shared David George, WMU Foundation president. “That is why we are thrilled to be able to dip into our current year operating revenue to make this gift to national WMU a reality.”
The WMU Foundation was established in 1995 by Dr. Dellanna O’Brien, former executive director of national WMU. The WMU Foundation offers a variety of opportunities to support those who are taking the gospel to the nations through a variety of funds and endowments, which fund women’s leadership development, anti-human trafficking efforts, scholarships for missionary kids and those pursuing missions careers, and much more.
“COVID-19 took a toll on 2020 giving to the WMU Foundation, and we do wish we could contribute more,” continued George. “Though this $45,000 gift will not solve all of national WMU’s financial needs, we hope it can serve as a way to strengthen their organization during these difficult times.”
The pandemic is not over, and there is still work to be done.
