BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — David George, president of the Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) Foundation, announced April 4 that Tammy Gaither of Rock Hill, S.C., is the recipient of the 2003 Sybil Bentley Dove Award.
Gaither is a testimony to the strength behind Christian Women’s Job Corps (CWJC), a WMU ministry located throughout the United States offering resources, encouragement, direction and real hope for women in need.
Six years ago, Gaither was one of those women. Formerly a single mother living in a homeless shelter, Gaither’s involvement with CWJC began as a participant paired with a mentor. However, over time she accepted many speaking engagements on behalf of the ministry, served on the board of her local site for three years and is currently a member of the CWJC National Advisory Council.
Trudy Johnson, CWJC director for national WMU, said, “Tammy exemplifies the purpose of this ministry, which is to equip women for life and employment. She experienced firsthand how the ministry is making a world of difference, one life at a time, and is now helping other women rebuild their lives.”
Gaither recently went through training at national WMU in Birmingham to be a site coordinator in York County, S.C., which is one of the original pilot sites for Christian Women’s Job Corps.
The Sybil Bentley Dove Award was established in 1998 by Faye Dove Wright in honor of her mother.
