500 seniors call Baptist retirement centers home

As the world constantly changes, Alabama Baptist Retirement Centers (ABRC), led by Billy Austin of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions, have not deterred from their 27-year-old mission to meet the needs of our state’s elderly and handicapped residents. In a video presentation to the convention, residents told how the retirement centers have helped them in their times of need.

After retirement, loss of a family member or illness, many senior adults find themselves in a scary, uncertain position. Limited by fixed incomes, costly living expenses and pricey medications, living alone becomes an impossibility. As a result, some seniors are forced to sell their homes and search for new living arrangements.

Thanks to donations from the convention, this year more than 500 seniors in situations just like these have found a place to call their own at ABRC.

“I retired in 1997 from the North American Mission Board, but when I was sick and needed a place this was just the right place for me,” said one resident.

“This is just a special way the Lord is saying He is taking care of me and that Southern Baptists are still there and blessing my life.”

Over the years, ABRC’s five facilities have ministered to countless residents by not only providing them with an affordable place to live, but also offering Bible studies, sermons and singing events.

According to the 2002 Book of Reports, residents from all denominations and many non-Christians and unchurched people attend worship services because they are lonely or interested in matters of faith.
