Carl P. Wells, who served on staff at First Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa, for nearly 40 years, died Dec. 23. He was 86.
Wells served at churches in Mississippi and Kentucky before answering the call to First, Tuscaloosa, as associate pastor of education in 1963. He served in that role for 33 years before retiring for the first time and taking on interim ministry at a number of churches. In 2002, he returned to First, Tuscaloosa, and served as minister to senior adults until retiring a second time in 2008. The church named him associate pastor emeritus.
During his time at the church, he began ministries for those with special needs, international students, seniors and prisoners.
Wells earned a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi College in Clinton and a master of religious education degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; daughter, Carla Lyn; son, Steven Ray; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
