Jay Weaver, a founding member of the Christian band Big Daddy Weave, died Jan. 2 from complications of COVID-19.
Weaver’s brother Mike, co-founder of the band and lead vocalist, announced the news on social media.
Big Daddy Weave formed in 1998 while the members were students at the University of Mobile. Jay Weaver sang and played bass guitar for the group. He stopped touring in August due to complications from diabetes and dialysis treatment, according to the band.
Weaver entered the hospital in late December for treatment of COVID-19 complications.
Real faith
Mike Weaver said anyone who knew Jay “knows how real his faith in Jesus was.
“Even though COVID may have taken his last breath, Jesus was right there to catch him. I know he’s seeing things now I long to see,” Mike Weaver said. “The prayers for healing can turn into prayers of thanksgiving now that Jay is in God’s presence.”
Big Daddy Weave has released nine albums and won several awards, including a Dove Award and two K-Love fan awards. The songs “Redeemed,” “The Lion and the Lamb,” “My Story,” “Overwhelmed” and “The Only Name (Yours Will Be)” are among their hits.
Jay Weaver is survived by his wife, Emily, and three children, Makenzie, Madison and Nathan Weaver.
