An annual tradition returned yesterday (Feb. 14) as the Baptist Active Women of Cleburne County met to bring a little Valentine’s cheer to residents of a local assisted living center.
For more than two decades, the missions group made up of women from multiple churches in the county and surrounding area have met in February for a “Valentine’s Serenade,” with members visiting homebound community members and singing favorite hymns, along with classic tunes like “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” and “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.”
Last year’s caroling was canceled due to the pandemic. This year, the group met at Carillon Oaks, an assisted living and memory care facility in Heflin, where they enjoyed a meal with residents and sang a few songs with them too.
One of the residents, Mary Blair, a longtime member of BAW, helped start the Valentine’s caroling tradition, according to BAW member Sandra Kent.
“She found the songs and helped organize the first caroling trip,” Kent said.
As in years past, BAW members each brought small items to fill a gift basket for each resident. The items included candy, stuffed animals, lotions, hand sanitizers and cards.
Current BAW president Joann Skinner said the group was excited to meet again this year to bring some Valentine’s cheer to local senior adults.
