Chip Smith recently was recognized for his 60th anniversary in gospel ministry. He preached Feb. 12 at Prattmont Baptist Church, Prattville.
The day was the anniversary of his first sermon at age 13 at the Montgomery City Jail.
Prattmont Pastor Pete Chadwick presented a framed certificate in recognition of Smith’s ministry. Smith and his wife, Elise, have been members of Prattmont for 12 years. They also teach Sunday School.
Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in religion and history from Samford University and a master of divinity degree from New Orleans Seminary. While at Samford, Smith led Cubahatchie Baptist Church, Shorter. He and his wife served as missionaries with the Home Mission Board (now North American Mission Board) while in seminary. They served Baptist missions in Vacherie and Labadieville in Louisiana. He has also served as pastor of Sweet Water Baptist; Catoma Baptist, Montgomery; First Baptist Church Midfield; FBC Geneva; Glynwood Baptist, Prattville; and Oakdale Baptist, Ramer.
He also served the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions as a state missionary in the office of LeaderCare and church administration. He previously served on the SBOM executive committee and as the chairman of the SBOM. At the University of Mobile, he served as a trustee and chairman of regents. He was among the inaugural group of ministerial mentors at Samford University.
The Smiths have two children and three grandchildren.
