The story coming out of First Baptist Church Phenix City and the city of Smiths Station continues to spread since allegations regarding pastor and mayor Bubba Copeland’s private life were the subject of an 1819 News article yesterday (Nov. 1). Confusion remains over exactly what Copeland disputes in the article and what he claims as being appropriate as long as it is separate from his roles at church and in city government.

The Alabama Baptist continues to try to reach Copeland as well as the church and city leaders for comments and clarification.
In the meantime, leaders of the Alabama Baptist State Convention and Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions responded this morning (Nov. 2) with the following statement:
“We have become aware of the alleged unbiblical behavior related to the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Phenix City. We are praying for the leaders of the church family as they seek to determine the truth concerning these accusations. As the people of God, we pray for the pastor and his family as well. We are in consultation with the Russell Baptist Association’s leadership as they endeavor to assist the First Baptist family during this critical time of need.”
