Mark Trammell, leader of the Mark Trammell Quartet, has a long history and has known Bob Smith, minister to “seasoned adults” at First Baptist Church Trussville, since “right before they invented white bread.”
FBC Trussville’s seasoned adults ministry hosted the quartet June 30. Addressing the concert’s audience, which consisted of many SAM members, Trammell shared that “[Bob and I] have shared together ministry over the years. I thank God for him. I know you love him here — at least most of you do.
“That’s what I’m hearing anyway,” he said while the crowd laughed.
The afternoon consisted of several of the quartet’s songs from their latest project, “Still Standing,” which proclaims:
“If we’re still here, / We’re still standing. / If we’re still standing, / God is not done with us yet.”
Favorites
Others were fan favorites and the quartet sang a few requests, including “Hallelujah, I’m Going Home,” which brought the majority of the audience to their feet.
The quartet also recognized those who had served in the U.S. military before honoring them with the song “Statue of Liberty.”
“All of those who just stood, I want to tell you, men and women, thank you for what you did,” Trammell said. “I personally want to thank you because if the Lord and my wife allow me to live until Aug. 7, I will celebrate 50 years doing what I’ve done.
“The reason I’ve been able to do that and literally go across the world telling people about Jesus is because of the little flag that’s on some of my stuff when I travel. The world still has respect for that flag. I’ve been welcomed everywhere I’ve been … because of those who just stood.”
Before ending, Smith asked Trammell if he could do one last request because “I’m kind of in charge. I’m going to pick what it is.
“I want to hear, ‘We Shall See Jesus,’” and the crowd enthusiastically agreed.
Experience
Trammell, who lives in Gadsden, has more than 40 years of experience in gospel music and has been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. He sings baritone and is accompanied by tenor Stephen Adair, lead Nick Trammell, who is Mark’s son, bass Will Lane and pianist Trevor Conkle whose hometown is Arab.
Conkle was a fan favorite, with more than one mentioning how enthusiastic he was when he was playing.
One attendee, Judy Hill, said that “his feet were just dancing all the time while he was playing. They were just going constantly, jumping up and down. I would imagine he must be sore because he also raised his arms and brought them down on the keyboard strongly and joyfully with each note.”
SAM is led by staff members Bob Smith with assistant Debbie Arrington, who also serves in education, as well as several church members.
SAM hosts many regular activities including a weekly Bible study, prayer times, choirs and service opportunities, all of which are shared through a monthly newsletter, “Seasoned Adult Ministry: Serving the Great I Am.”
Their eight-page printed newsletter and 16-page online version include a monthly article by TAB Media’s Ken Lass, who also writes a devotional column for The Alabama Baptist. This extensive bulletin also contains other related articles, upcoming events and reports from past events, tips geared to older adults, general helpful information and celebrations of members.
