U.S. attorneys for Alabama’s Middle, Northern and Southern Districts recently announced plans to deploy “District Election Officers” to oversee election-related issues. The effort is in connection with the Department of Justice’s Election Day Program for Nov. 5, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Northern District of Alabama.
Each DEO, who is an appointed assistant U.S. attorney, will handle complaints on voting rights concerns, threats to election officials, and potential election fraud, in coordination with DOJ headquarters, an Oct. 17 release noted.
On alert
Prim F. Escalona, U.S. attorney of the Northern District, emphasized the importance of fair elections and the DOJ’s commitment to protecting voter rights, addressing election abuses and ensuring public confidence.
“Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and to have that vote counted in a fair and free election,” Escalona said in the release.
Federal law prohibits acts such as voter intimidation, fraud and vote manipulation, offering protections for voters to exercise their rights without interference, the release noted. FBI agents and local authorities will reportedly be on alert to manage allegations of fraud. For complaints, citizens can contact the DEO at 205–244–2001 or reach the FBI field office at 205–326–6166.
