University of Mobile breaks ground for new residence hall

Prayers and songs of praise filled the air as students, faculty and staff gathered at the University of Mobile (UM) to break ground on a $3.3 million residence hall.

The 101-bed dormitory will be completed in time for students enrolling for the fall semester 2004. The 26,000-square-foot facility is part of UM’s master plan to increase the number of students living on campus. Currently, on-campus housing is available for up to 400 students, out of a total enrollment of 1,872.

The ground-breaking ceremony was celebrated with prayer led by UM President Mark Foley and the sounds of the 60-member Voices of Mobile.

With heavy machinery in the background, Foley turned the official duties of breaking ground over to students. Teams representing Mobile’s residential housing areas grabbed shovels, buckets and spoons in a race to dig the biggest dirt pile. The team from Avery Woods cottages won the prize of gold-painted construction hats and the title “Honorary Construction Crew.” (UM)
