Eighteen years after her first column appeared in The Alabama Baptist, Betty Baggott has decided to retire.
During that span, Betty wrote about people, about events in her life and about issues in ways that touched the hearts of readers everywhere. Countless letters testified to how people identified with her experiences and were touched by her words. Readership studies documented what the letters illustrated — Betty’s column had a strong following.
The year Betty began as a columnist (1988), she also began serving as a director for the state Baptist paper. She served as a director through 1997. Betty has been a strong supporter of the paper and a good friend of all who serve the Lord through The Alabama Baptist.
She wrote, “My journey with The Alabama Baptist has been a great one. … My love, admiration and prayers for each of you.”
Of her future, Betty wrote, “I plan to spend a lot more time with my family, especially my precious, precious spina bifida (grand)baby in Minnesota.”
Betty is not leaving Alabama. She will continue to live in Opelika and be active as a speaker and conference leader as well as work in her church.
All of us at The Alabama Baptist wish Betty all of God’s blessings in the days ahead and sincerely appreciate her contributions as a columnist for almost two decades.
