More than 250 youth and adults gathered atop Lookout Mountain June 16 for an Outdoor Extravaganza, sponsored by Minvale Baptist Church, Fort Payne, in DeKalb Baptist Association.
“As a church, we wanted to start building a relationship with our Jerusalem,” said Darrell Haney, outreach and recreation director for Minvale Baptist.
By 9 a.m., with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department mounted unit standing guard and helping with crowd control, the family-oriented event was well on its way. The archery contest lasted until 1 p.m., and then the skeet shoot carried the event to 4 p.m.
First, second and third place trophies were given to men, women and youth division winners for the shooting events. Door prizes including shotguns, a muzzleloader, a four-wheeler and a hunting trip for two, all donated by Minvale, were given away as well. Those in attendance were also given a chance to win a “hunt of a lifetime,” donated by M.U.D. Ministries, an evangelistic organization in Oneonta that partnered with Minvale for the event.
Attendees were encouraged to bring their mounted trophies to be judged as well. “We had several people bring in deer, bass and even bobcats to be judged,” Haney said.
Another 150 people joined the day’s participants for the evening dinner of catfish, chicken fingers and shrimp and preaching time. Jeff Deaver with M.U.D. Ministries gave his testimony. Eric Hixon, founder of M.U.D. Ministries, preached on priorities.
Haney said, “To have never done this type of thing before, it far exceeded our expectations.” He plans to repeat this event next year
