Memphis Baptist Church, Dothan, in Columbia Baptist Association recently formed Alabama’s second chapter of F.A.I.T.H. Riders, a national association of Christian bikers started by First Baptist Church at the Mall in Lakeland, Fla. On May 6, about 250 people from Alabama, Georgia and Florida met at the group’s commissioning ceremony for singing, preaching and the presentation of the chapter certificate.
“We started our chapter with 12 members,” said Rodger Hall, director of the Memphis Baptist ministry. “There are six members from our church and six from the Columbia Baptist Association office. … Now we are commissioned and we are ready to get our ministry in action.”
Jerry Grandstaff, director of missions for the association, joined the Memphis Baptist chapter. He hopes this ministry will help Christian motorcycle enthusiasts build relationships with other bikers and become more intentionally involved in missions and evangelism.
“By building these relationships, you are able to talk about their spiritual lives,” Grandstaff said. “The motorcycle is the avenue that opens the door and makes it possible for that relationship to be built.”
The group planned to sponsor its first ministry outreach, a bike night called TNT (Thursday Night Thunder), May 17. The monthly TNT events will be held every third Thursday at Memphis Baptist from 6–8:30 p.m. and will include food, music, bike games and Christian fellowship.
