IMB day of prayer to focus on remote Russian villagers

Tucked away in Russia’s Ural Mountains are 750,000 people who desperately need the prayers of Alabama Baptists, according to the International Mission Board (IMB).

The Udmurt, a people who live mostly in small farming villages, have low income and a high suicide rate. They have strong animistic roots and false ideas about idols carved by their ancestors.

And less than one quarter of 1 percent claim faith in Jesus Christ.

That’s why the IMB has selected them as the focus of this year’s Day of Prayer and Fasting for World Evangelization, to be observed May 27.

For the day of prayer and fasting — held every year on Pentecost Sunday — churches are encouraged to find meaningful ways to focus on people in need of Christ. Some preach global missions sermons, plan a meal to skip together as a congregation or study special Sunday School lessons available on the IMB’s Web site.

The goal of the day, according to the IMB, is "to see the kingdom of God come to the people group being prayed for. The power of united prayer is immeasurable."
