FBC Pinson member reaching students in Manila

Regular readers of the Missionaries Write column in The Alabama Baptist will recognize Kevin Sanders’ name. The member of First Baptist Church, Pinson, in Birmingham Baptist Association is a frequent contributor to the column, sharing about his experiences on the missions field.

Sanders, who is supported by his home church, First, Pinson, through the Kevin Sanders Misisonary Fund, works with students on the college campuses in Manila, Philippines.

"Most of the students that I meet are aware that something is missing in their relationship with God," Sanders said. "Most of them are unsure of where they would go after death, and many may have drifted away from God. They respond very well to a message that they can make a decision to personally know God and have salvation."

Sanders and his team of fellow Christians strive to reach the city’s estimated student population of 800,000 to 1 million. Because the numbers are so vast, the team also relies on college students from the United States who do volunteer missions work during their summer break in June and July. This is the prime time for ministry in the Philippines, Sanders explained, because the Philippine school year begins in June.

"The students’ biggest need is people that are willing to share the gospel with them and spend the time building relationships with them and disciple them," he said. These relationships lead to the formation of small-group Bible studies and opportunities to invite students to a True Love Waits seminar.

Sanders, who worked for a few years with the International Mission Board, is currently home in Pinson for a brief visit before returning to the field.
