I appreciated your Feb. 8 editorial “Be Pro-Life, Give Blood.” Usually when we hear the term “pro-life,” we think of abortion. But the term should apply to many factors that shorten or terminate lives prematurely.
It is difficult to understand why people don’t donate blood. Are they afraid? Is it inconvenient?
The last time my wife and I donated blood (in February), we had to wait an hour or so. My advice on the “convenience question” is to consider whether if it is better to give rather than receive.
If you can’t remember to donate, mark your calendar ahead eight weeks each time you donate. If you are old and retired (as is the case with my wife and me), donating blood is one thing we can do for others that costs us nothing and can really make a difference. The Red Cross says you are never too old to give.
Some young people have celebrated their 17th birthday by donating blood. I have encouraged my granddaughter (who will be 17 this year) to celebrate this way.
Youth ministers could encourage their young people to participate in this very meaningful activity.
