At the encouragement of First Priority of Alabama, Gov. Bob Riley has declared March 30 a Day of Prayer for Students Across Alabama.
Alabama students face “extreme challenges” from school violence to substance abuse, Riley said in his proclamation Feb. 21.
“[I]t is incumbent upon parents, corporate and community leaders to do everything within their power to protect the students of Alabama and help them develop qualities of character, essential for their future family and leadership roles,” he said.
“Alabamians are encouraged on this day to pray for God’s protection, guidance and peace, and for opportunities and blessings on the students of Alabama.”
According to First Priority, churches and individuals are planning various ways to observe the day on the day itself and leading up to it.
- Teachers are meeting outside their school before classes to pray for their students, much like students do for See You at the Pole.
- Churches such as North Highlands Baptist, Hueytown, in Bessemer Baptist Association, are hosting 24-hour prayer vigils or school-hour prayer chains. North Highlands Baptist is also among churches sponsoring parent fellowships in the weeks leading up to the day of prayer.
- Churches are making black and red ribbons for lapels and car antennas to hand out at church March 25 in promotion of the day of prayer.
- Churches are printing lawn signs to promote prayer for students.
- Churches are encouraging members to at least drive by their child’s school March 30 and say a prayer from their car for all students, teachers and administration. They are also encouraging members to organize a prayer walk around schools in their area.
