The witness and influence of Baptists in the world would be diminuitive if not for the vision, creativity, education, missions support and synergy provided by Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) throughout our history. WMU, as an auxiliary to the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), has always been a source of strength for the life and work of the SBC.
Yet, WMU has never received Cooperative Program monies, except those dispersed by SBC agencies and boards involved in partnership projects with WMU. This has allowed Baptist women to practice that wonderful Baptist principle of autonomy.
Five years ago, our congregation at Shades Crest Baptist Church, Birmingham, decided to begin supporting national Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) through our annual ministry budget. Since 2002, we have sent 1 percent of our ministry budget to the WMU Foundation.
We do so knowing these monies will be utilized to ensure that children, youth and adults will experience the finest missions education experiences available anywhere in the world.
I encourage all other Baptist pastors and missions leaders to consider guiding your churches to include national WMU in your annual giving. We need WMU as a resource partner as we fulfill the mission of God.
