Abuja, Nigeria — Following a Kaduna state decision to implement “sharia,” the Islamic legal system, Muslim groups have continued to besiege the state House of Assembly, demanding quick enactment. Islamic leaders led hundreds of Muslims in a solidarity demonstration to the Assembly Dec. 21, in support of Muslim members who have set up an 11-man-committee to prepare a working document for the total implementation of sharia.
One leader said, “From all indications, the people want sharia. This has been confirmed by a delegation of people from Zaria and more than 10,000 people from Kaduna North and South, who indicated their preference for sharia.”
Yet, Kaduna state has a population of more than 4 million people, and Christians are asking why the government wants to satisfy the aspirations of less than 1 percent of the population. Christians are being discriminated against in many states in northern Nigeria even before sharia is in place. The House of Assembly Committee has until March 19 to fine-tune the document.
