Tim Andrews, associate pastor of First Baptist Church, Valley, is "big into" old cars and racing. In fact, before marriage and fatherhood, he used to "eat, sleep and drink" cars. But even though Andrews no longer spends a lot of time on his hobby, it’s given him the perfect foundation on which to build a ministry.
Performance Ministries for the Race of Life invites local car buffs to cruise in to the Sonic Drive-In in Lanett the third Thursday of every month. (Andrews usually arrives in his ’69 Chevrolet Camaro.) While the conversation largely revolves around the vintage vehicles in the parking lot, Andrews and others involved in the ministry also find opportunities to share the gospel.
"I can get away with being somewhat forward with some of these people because I’m in this car culture," Andrews explained.
The acronym RACE is used to express Performance Ministries’ mission: Reach the lost, Assimilate them into church, Challenge them in their faith and Encourage them to do likewise. "Our intent is to reach people," Andrews said, noting at one of the last cruise-ins, most of the people there were unchurched.
First, Valley, is in East Liberty Baptist Association. Chad McDonald is pastor.
