After reading an article in The Alabama Baptist, Pastor Bill Trawick of Enon Baptist Church, Montevallo, knew just whom he needed to speak to students at his church’s revival service Aug. 5.
The “Houndstooth Twins,” also known as the “Bama Twins.”
Appropriately named for their identical appearance and houndstooth headgear, Ashley and Maegen Bailey have become an iconic symbol of University of Alabama football spirit. But the sisters’ active involvement in their home church — Union Hill Baptist, Oneonta — and unwavering faith, which goes deeper than their blond beauty, were what appealed to Trawick. And speaking at the Shelby Baptist Association church was an opportunity for the twins to further the ministry side of their fame.
“A lot of people just see us as two girls in hats at Bama games. People have preconceived notions about us,” Ashley Bailey said. “We want people to know what we’re really about.”
Nearly 50 youth brought school supplies and canned goods to the lower level of Enon Baptist in order to benefit the church’s drive, aimed to benefit both local and countywide children in need, and in return receive an autographed picture from the twins.
Following the autograph session, fellowship and youth meeting at which the twins spoke encouraging students to stand firm in their faith, those gathered made their way upstairs to the main auditorium to join in the revival service.
There, Maegen Bailey played the piano and the twins encouraged parents to play an active part in ministering to their children.
The sisters said they were glad to be a part of the service and help teach students the importance of putting God first.
“Yes, you’re still going to have hard times, but if you put Him first, everything will fall into place,” Maegen Bailey said. “We came to encourage (the youth) and provide hope for what they’re going through.”
Trawick is glad the Baileys were able to meet with his students and share their experiences, too. He said he was especially grateful for the sisters’ unexpected participation in the school-supplies drive.
“We wanted them to minister to us by speaking and being here, and they’ve ministered to us far beyond that,” he said.
