October conference offers training for literacy missions volunteers

Are you interested in helping others learn to read or non-English speakers learn English? Did you know you can fulfill those interests and share your faith at the same time?

At this year’s annual literacy missions conference, participants will learn how to do just that.
Sponsored by the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions (SBOM), the Oct. 6–8 conference is designed to help both those new to literacy missions and those active in an established literacy missions work, said Gena Heatherly, SBOM literacy missions coordinator.

“We have lots of great breakout [sessions] and leaders,” she said.

The conference, held at Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center in Talladega, will be split into a basic conference and an experienced leaders conference running simultaneously. The basic conference covers the precepts needed for getting started in literacy missions and is for those wishing to start a new work or join an existing one. Upon completing the conference training, participants will be certified as North American Mission Board literacy missions teachers in their local ministries.

The experienced leaders conference is for those who already are active in literacy missions and have been certified. Participants will have 12 sessions in which to choose one of a variety classes to expand their skills and provide ideas for ministry.

Heatherly added that organizers also plan to present awards to recognize literacy work in the state.

She said this conference is one of the four largest literacy missions conferences offered in the nation, drawing participants from many locations. “A lot of people try to come in from out of state because they can’t get this kind of training or want fresh ideas,” she said.

Heatherly hopes to have about 150 people attend this year’s event. For information call 1-800-264-1225, Ext. 597 or Ext. 311, or e-mail amvol@alsbom.org.  (TAB)
