Attendance skyrockets for Madison church’s event

A recent special-emphasis Sunday at Wall Highway Baptist Church, Madison, in Madison Baptist Association caused church attendance to increase by more than 50 percent over the preceding weeks and then stay high the following Sunday.

The Aug. 6 event, dubbed Mission: Possible, emphasized high attendance in Sunday School and included a ministry fair, lunch and activities for children, youth, adults and senior adults.

“Mission: Possible proved to be a great campaign and ministry event,” Pastor Lee Singley said. “The excitement for me as a pastor is not just the fact that we had 795 in attendance but that one week later, we had 461 in Sunday School and 558 in worship, which is 100 more than we usually have in attendance.”

The idea began when Singley began meeting with a small group to develop ways to involve new members. A leadership team grew from the effort, and Mission: Possible began to take shape.
Postcards were mailed to the community, and Singley encouraged his congregation with the challenge, “For every one, bring one.”

At the event, visitors and members were given opportunities to fellowship, as well as sign up for Awana, Upward basketball, children’s choir, adult Bible study and other ministries.

And even better than the number present was the spirit among the people there and the way church members bent over backward to serve visitors that day, said church member Eileen Sterling. “That was the best part — it was a nice day.”
