With “Perceptions,” This Beautiful Republic has not only maintained the energy and emotion of its acclaimed 2007 debut but the group also has broken the sophomore-release curse by taking both aspects up a notch whenever it could. Both musically and spiritually, this is a powerful record, full of epic orchestration and visceral guitar-rock punch. And though the angst remains, it has been honed, toned and, for the most part, stripped of the saccharin arrangements that garnered the group early comparisons to bands like My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy. Instead This Beautiful Republic can now chart its own course.
