‘Fireproof’ near top of charts again

The movie “Fireproof” and its companion book “The Love Dare” were surprise hits in the mainstream market late last year, and 2009 is proving to be no different.

“Fireproof” captured one of the two $100,000 Epiphany Prizes for Inspiring Movies and TV — awarded to movies and television shows aiming to increase man’s love and comprehension of God — at the 17th annual Movieguide Faith and Values Awards Gala in Beverly Hills, Calif., an event that recognizes films promoting family values and biblical principles.

Made mostly by volunteers at Sherwood Baptist Church, Albany, Ga., “Fireproof” opened at No. 2 in DVD sales for the week ending Jan. 31 and now sits at No. 5, according to data compiled by the company Rentrak and posted on VideoBusiness.com.

Billboard, which compiles its data differently, had “Fireproof” opening at No. 3 in the magazine’s Feb. 21 edition.

“The Love Dare” — a book which plays a central role in the movie’s plot — once again is No. 1 on The New York Times’ best-seller list for paperback advice books. It has been ranked on the list for 20 weeks and was No. 1 last fall. (BP, RNS)
