Jane Leland has retired from First Baptist Church, Opelika, in Tuskegee Lee Baptist Association after nearly 32 years as organist. She also led the women’s and senior adult ministries for many years.
Minister of Music Brett Fuller called Leland “one of the most gifted organists and musicians I know. Mrs. Leland [has] a keen sense of worship flow and the nuances of service,” he said. “She is a gifted leader and one who encourages a great amount of morale throughout our entire ministry and church.”
Along with serving as organist, Leland led the adult ensemble and senior adult choir. In the women’s ministry, she oversaw a core group of leaders as well as the organization of events, including Bible studies, fellowship meals and retreats.
First, Opelika, will celebrate Leland’s retirement with a day of music May 10. Organist Diane Bish, who is known for her PBS television series “The Joy of Music,” will give a tribute concert for Leland in the 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship services.
Steve Scoggins is senior pastor of First, Opelika.
