Alabama Singing Men tour to kick off June 6

Alabama Baptist music group the Alabama Singing Men (ASM) is kicking off its 34th annual concert tour June 6 starting with its Alabama roots and concluding with the Baptist Church Music Conference in Nashville.

Conducted by Thomas R. Smith, minister of music at Providence Baptist Church, Opelika, and retired chairman of Auburn University’s department of music, the concert tour will canvass four cities in two states over the group’s three-day expedition.

“The tour itself is a great opportunity for all of the Singing Men to be together and share time away from their respective churches and come together … to share time with each other and make music together,” Smith said. “Normally these guys are on the leading end of music making and it’s neat to be able to do the performing themselves with Alabama Singing Men.”

Schedule for the concert tour includes:

• Community Baptist Church, Maylene, June 6 at 7 p.m.

• Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, Birmingham, June 7 at 9:30 and 11 a.m.

• Mount Zion Baptist Church, Huntsville, June 7 at 6 p.m.

• Baptist Church Music Conference at First Baptist Church, Nashville, June 8 at 7:30 p.m.

While at Nashville’s music conference, ASM will join other Southern Baptist state men’s singing groups to form a 300-man choir performance under the guidance of Milburn Price, former dean of Samford University’s school of performing arts and past conductor of the Samford A Cappella Choir.

Organized in 1976 with a group of full-time Alabama Baptist music ministers, the 70-member ensemble has since grown to include bivocational music ministers, laymen, pastors and church staff, as well as music faculty from Alabama Baptist colleges and universities.

The group is sponsored by the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions’ office of worship leadership and church music.

ASM is noted for its diverse musical repertoire ranging from traditional anthems and hymn arrangements to contemporary praise songs. (TAB)
