For the past three years, a small group of members of First Baptist Church, Graysville, has been making an active difference in the lives of children across the state the best way it knows how: with needles. With thread. With thimbles — though apparently not enough of those, according to the pastor. “They’ve got stab wounds all over their fingers,” Pastor Hugh Thomas said.
All 64. And 16 thumbs. “There’s three of us that quilt and five that hem,” said Thomas’ wife, Regina. “We just call ourselves the sew ministry.” Under the leadership of Regina Thomas and church member Virginia Smith, the sew ministry of the North Jefferson Baptist Association church meets each Wednesday night and quilts. And quilts. And quilts. The fruits of its labor are donated to children at the Alabama Baptist Children’s Homes & Family Ministries (ABCH). On May 30, the group delivered 24 quilts to ABCH’s Decatur campus. Regina Thomas is an ABCH accountant. “The main reason we do it … is so the children will have one (quilt) to take away with them, something they could remember,” she said, noting a child may come to the Children’s Homes and stay one night or 30 days.
